Design Lust: Installment Seven

Brazilian’s really know great design! Maybe it’s all that exposure to nature and dramatic scenery, or maybe it’s the country’s long history of lively, colorful celebrations like Carnival. Whatever it is, it seems Brazilian’s really have an eye for modern, casual, beachy chic like no one else.

I was lucky to stay in two of the most stunning hotels, and meet their lovely designers. In Itacare, an idyllic beach town in the region on Bahia, we stayed at the nine-room boutique hotel, Vila Barracuda.  Designed by the lovely Sao Paulo native and graphic designer, Juliana Ghiotto and a group of friends from Sweden, the hotel (which took nearly 7 years to restore!) perfectly mixes streamlined Nordic design, with all the color and life of the Bahia region.

Take a look…

After our truly perfect experience at Vila Barracuda, we couldn’t imagine any other hotel could meet our high expectations. Enter Casa Geranio. Booked on Airbnb, we weren’t sure what to expect. Turned out we stumbled across a true gem. Nestled in the middle of a tropic oasis, proprietors and designers Claudio and Gabriel have created a luxury B&B experience in the hills of Santa Teresa, Rio De Jeneiro.

I can’t go on enough about what amazing hosts these two guys are. They are booked almost all the time and yet when you stay with them you feel special, like you are one of their many jet-set friends come to stay for the weekend, and not a total stranger. I could have talked to Gabriel all day about his interior design experience, and Claudio was just the most gracious host.

Without further adieu, let me show you their magical home. First, the small details, the things that really set apart the good, from the great…

The elegantly restored mansion maintains much of it’s original design. These walls have been restored to their original glory. The house was built in the early 1900’s

The house, which was restored in just under a year and a half, was designed to reflect the modern-sophisticated style of the hosts.

Gabriel walks through his newest creation. This room should be ready for use right about now. I think we may have to go back.

It’s always a bit of a gamble, finding a place online in a country halfway across the world, and hoping it turns out to be everything you hoped and dreamed. Luck was really with us on this trip. We couldn’t have asked for more gracious hosts, or more unique digs. Thanks to Claudio, Gabriel and Juliana again for the trip of a lifetime. We can’t wait to come back!
